Today our FFA Chapter hosted an event about "sharing the road" with farmers this fall. All high schoolers were able to learn about different equipment used during harvest and then how to share the road with them. Students were urged to be patient, give themselves extra time when traveling, and to make sure to leave plenty of room between their vehicles and the machinery. We hope all area farmers have a safe and bountiful harvest!

Mark Harms, our FC74 School Board President, also serves as the current Vice President of the Illinois Association of School Boards. This week, Mr. Harms and a team of IASB officers and directors traveled to Washington D.C. to attend the Federal Advocacy Conference, where they met with the staff members of several senators and representatives from Illinois to discuss federal legislation affecting the funding of education. The IASB works hard to advocate for education in Illinois, including Flanagan-Cornell #74!

Mrs. Harms and her fourth grade class, along with Mrs. Chipman and her high school Ag students embarked on a unique challenge Wednesday through the St. Louis Science Center and Illinois Ag in the Classroom. The "SOIL YOUR UNDIES" challenge is designed to teach students that soil is definitely NOT just DIRT!! Through this experiment, we teach the importance of soil conservation, the hidden life within soil, how our lives depend on soil, the names and characteristics of the soil layers, and so much more! We buried three pairs of 100% cotton, white, new underwear, and we will dig them up at different time intervals over the next three months. We made predictions what might happen to the undies, listened to Mrs. Chipman telling us about soil, and observed the soil that the Ag boys dug up for us. We will share our first update at the end of September. The kids have enjoyed this project, which has caused some laughter as you can imagine! 😊 We are so lucky to live in a place with such rich, fertile, amazing soil! 🌱
