Mrs. Kaeb's 8th grade Ag class has been learning where their food comes from and how it's made. This week they made butter in a jar. They had different varieties that included honey, garlic, and cinnamon sugar that they enjoyed with crackers. Today they made homemade ice cream in a bag. They enjoyed this with a variety of toppings!

It has been a busy two weeks in Mrs. Kaeb’s agriculture classes! Plant and Crop Science: Students wrapped up their plant anatomy unit by dissecting flowers and identifying each part. They have now moved into monocots and dicots, where they observed plant stems under microscopes to compare the arrangement of vascular bundles. Intro to Agriculture – Dairy Unit: Students sampled 18 different cheeses while learning about the characteristics, processing, and components that makes cheese unique. Dual Credit Animal Science: This class has been hard at work studying nutrition, digestion, and feed rations. Students examined various feed components, comparing crude protein levels and dry matter content. They then applied their knowledge by building their own “feed” mixtures using the Pearson Square method to determine how much of each ingredient was needed to reach a desired protein level.

The Fourth Graders were treated to a guest speaker! Jeremy Duffy, the Deputy Executive Director of the IASB came to share his travel adventures with us. We studied the 7 continents and 5 oceans and Jeremy has been to ALL 7 continents and over 70 countries! We had world cookies and ocean punch too. We enjoyed seeing all of the amazing pictures and locating the places on our map! (Mrs. Harms dressed as Cleopatra since his recent adventure was to Egypt) Thank you, Jeremy! 🌎

Congratulations to Flanagan-Cornell High School on achieving Exemplary Status on our Illinois School Report Card! A special thank you to our Flanagan and Cornell communities, teachers, staff and students for their hard work and determination!

In Illinois, an exemplary report card designation indicates that a school is in the top 10% of all schools, demonstrating high academic performance and no underperforming student groups.

Criteria for Exemplary Status: Schools must meet specific performance indicators to achieve an exemplary designation. This includes having no underperforming student groups that fall below the "all students" group of the lowest-performing schools in the state. Essentially, this means that all student demographics are performing well above the state averages.
