Eclipse Information - Monday, August 21
The only “safe” time to look at the eclipse without safety equipment is during the 2 minutes or so of totality. We will not be in the path of totality. See the link for a map that shows the path of totality. https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/sites/default/files/interactive_map/index.html
It will not be safe for anyone to look directly at the sun without safety equipment being correctly and consistently used at any time in Flanagan such as Eyeglasses designed for solar eclipse, welding helmet, pinhole viewer, reverse shadow, NASA and other website streaming. Without these items, eye damage will occur. Sunglasses are not considered safe when viewing an eclipse.
It is completely safe to be outside, to look out the window at the sunlight on the ground or the sky without looking directly at the sun. It is safe to view the eclipse on TV or the internet.
We strongly encourage you to purchase quality eclipse viewing glasses if you intend to watch the eclipse from home. The effect of the sun’s damage to your retinas is cumulative, meaning that it is not safe to take several small glances at the sun without protection.
TIMING OF ECLIPSE:
Start (Moon hits edge of sun) 11:51 am
Maximum (moon covering approximately 90% of sun) 1:17-1:19 pm
End (last edge of the moon away from the sun) 2:42 pm
WHAT WE CAN OBSERVE FROM INSIDE:
The school is planning to have showings of the eclipse in classrooms and the library. Some of our classes will be going outside to view the eclipse using appropriate safety equipment.
