Course Description
ENGLISH A 1 YEAR 1.0 CREDIT (Required)
This course is offered to students who are referred by their Junior High Language Arts Teacher and/or whose test scores indicate a need for help in reading, language arts. The class concentrates on grammar skills with some short writing activities and various reading assignments.
ENGLISH I 1 YEAR 1.0 CREDIT (Required)
In this course, students will receive their last in-depth grammar and sentence structure instruction. Composition skills are addressed as students learn and practice various methods and techniques to develop topics into narrative, descriptive, expository, and persuasive paragraphs.
Literature study includes short stories, drama, non-fiction essays, and some poetry. Romeo and Juliet is the major literary work covered in this course.
ENGLISH II 1 YEAR 1.0 CREDIT (Required)
In this course, students will study various forms of literature: short story, classic literature, and young adult literature novels.
Basic grammar and usage will be reviewed. Communication skills will be emphasized through students' writing as well as through a quarter long public speaking unit. PREREQUISITE: English I
ENGLISH III 1 YEAR 1.0 CREDIT (Required)
Literature in this course focuses on American writers and how the literature is related to the events of history. Students learn to use analysis and critical thinking to evaluate literature.
Through the writing of compositions, students will learn how to develop a thesis and build an outline. Students will use computers for their writing and for research. Technology will be integrated into the coursework. PREREQUISITE: English I, II
ENGLISH IV - 1 YEAR. 1.0 CREDIT (Required if not taking Dual Credit)
The emphasis in this course is on learning to organize one's thoughts and then to develop the skills to communicate those thoughts effectively in writing as well. Students will use technology in researching, writing, and delivering presentations. Standard usage and proper mechanics are stressed, along with proper style based on specific audience, purpose and content. Appropriate strategies for communication in real-life, career ready settings is covered all year long. Classic and young adult literature novels are used to complete thematic units to compare/contrast among the novels. PREREQUISITE: English I, II, III

English 101 – 1 SEM. 0.5 CREDIT
3 HRS COLLEGE CREDIT with Heartland Community College
This course progresses the student from writing expressive compositions (expressing the ideas of the writer) to writing referential compositions (explaining or analyzing subject matter for the reader) to writing persuasive compositions (persuading the audience), through critical reading, discussion, exercises, conferences, and revision. The majority of the writing is referential.
PREREQUISITE: English III and HCC’s placement requirements.
English 102 –1 SEM. 0.5 CREDIT
3 HRS COLLEGE CREDIT with Heartland Community College
This course progresses the student from writing analysis of and inquiring about issues to writing argumentative and persuasive compositions using research, through critical reading, discussion, exercises, conferences, and revision. The majority of the writing is argumentative and reflective
Prerequisite: English 101 with a grade of “C” or better.
