Introduction to Agriculture
Prerequisites: None. Course available to freshmen and sophomores or upperclassmen with consent of instructor.
Purpose: This course is an introduction to agriculture and the FFA organization. Students will have the opportunity to learn theory and practical application in basic plant and animal science, leadership, record keeping, and agriculture carpentry. Computer use will be integrated into various topics in the course. After students take this course, they will be much more knowledgeable about the basics of the agricultural industry as well as how it can be used in their future.
Agriculture Science
Prerequisites: None but highly preferred to take Introduction to Agriculture first. Course is only available to sophomores-seniors.
Purpose: This course is designed to expand upon the knowledge gained in Introduction to Agriculture. The class will give students further knowledge in the areas of animal science, plant science, and food science. The course will focus on the science aspect of each concept and gain experience using the Scientific Method. Students will also use computers for various parts of the class.
Horticulture
Prerequisites: None but preferred to take Introduction to Agriculture first. Course is only available to sophomores-seniors.
Purpose: This course will cover the careers in the horticultural industry, as well as some plant identification, plant biology and care, how plants grow, plant propagation, basic plant requirements, hydroponics, and floral design. This course will also cover the basics of greenhouse management, agribusiness through developing a horticulture business involving advertising, marketing, pricing, and selling greenhouse plants. Finally, the course will cover the basics of landscape design and developing and implementing a landscape design.
Advanced Horticulture
Prerequisites: Horticulture Science
This course focuses on greenhouse management, floral design and landscape design. Major units of study include floriculture, plant identification, and the culture of greenhouse crops. Also included are care and handling of cut flowers, principles of art applied to floral design, and the mechanics of floral design. Agribusiness units will be introduced in merchandising, advertising, sales, and operating a retail floral business. Improving computer and workplace skills will be a focus.
Ag Mechanics
Prerequisites: None but preferred to take Introduction to Agriculture first. Course is only available to sophomores-seniors.
Purpose: This course is designed to provide the student with the opportunity to learn the concepts and practical application of basic agricultural mechanics technologies. The course will cover basic instruction in shop safety, carpentry, electricity, welding, and small engines. Classroom instruction and hands-on applications will be used predominately in this course.
Ag Leadership
Prerequisites: None but preferred to take Introduction to Agriculture first. Course is only available to juniors and seniors.
Purpose: This course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and leadership experiences to help them to become successful in life and in the workplace. Students will further enhance their potential for leadership development, personal growth, and career success. As a part of this course, students will practice their leadership skills by creating a mentoring program for upper elementary students. They will also be required to give presentations about agriculture to various groups including monthly Ag in the Classroom presentations to elementary students.
Ag Business
Prerequisites: None but preferred to take Introduction to Agriculture first. Course is only available to juniors and seniors.
Purpose: This course is designed to give students an opportunity to learn about the economic and managerial aspects of a business with a strong emphasis on marketing. Students will gain experience in advertising, securing credit, and basic economic principles as well. Students will also develop employability skills. Students will enhance their reading, math, writing, and computer skills through class applications.
